Trauma Recovery

TraumabodyA storm just over the horizon…

Like dark clouds swirling out of control, your thoughts churn…

“I can’t take this anymore!

“It’s too intense inside.”

“I must be doing something wrong.”

“Maybe I’m just bad?!”

“What’s the point… people don’t like me anyway.”

If you fail, you’re bad. If you succeed, you don’t deserve it. That belief sets up a world where there’s no point in trying.

It’s no wonder you’re overwhelmed.

Shame, guilt, fear, and insecurity gnaw at your sense of self. Rage simmers beneath the surface, accompanied by an anxiety that never quite goes away.

There’s a persistent dread that something will go wrong, leaving you feeling disempowered.

You fear abandonment, yet you crave intimacy.

You want to be with others, yet you push them away.

You want to succeed, but the thought of failure is unbearable.

Life becomes a constant tension – like standing at a fork in the road, paralyzed because you cannot decide which way to go.

Miserable as your world shrinks around you…

No aim for the future, no satisfaction in the present, and no respite from the flashbacks of the past…

Lashing out, overreacting, and retreating into escapism are unhealthy ways to relieve tension, but they don’t make life any easier.

But you hang in there and put on a brave face! You fake your way through life, people-pleasing and overextending yourself for others, often staying in unhealthy relationships because the alternative feels too daunting.

Trauma therapy is different.

A little history…

Trauma therapy draws inspiration from ancient body-mind-spirit practices. Mindfulness comes from Buddhist traditions. Many indigenous healing systems use holistic approaches. Cultures from around the globe have used these practices for thousands of years. They emphasize the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit in healing.

Trauma therapy also integrates insights from Western psychology. We can draw the emphasis on the nervous system back to Jean-Martin Charcot, a neurologist at the Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris in the mid to late 1800s. The concept of dissociation—feelings of disconnection or numbing—are particularly important. Dissociation was first studied by a colleague of Charcot named Pierre Janet. Janet’s groundbreaking work on dissociation shapes our understanding of how trauma impacts the mind and body to this day.

Where are we now?

Trauma therapy has evolved. It has become clear that experiential approaches—those that actively engage the body and nervous system—are essential for addressing trauma at its roots. These methods help resolve the physical and emotional imprints of trauma that talking alone cannot fully reach.

In fact, simply talking about trauma without careful guidance can sometimes be counterproductive. Doing so can trigger emotional flashbacks or leave clients overwhelmed. That’s why talk therapy alone is often insufficient for trauma healing.

Discussing trauma is an important part of the healing process. But, we must approach it with care and awareness. Think: when you talk about your trauma, do you feel intense anxiety or emotional flooding? Or do you feel flat and disconnected, as if the words aren’t yours? These body responses offer crucial information about where healing needs to begin.

At our practice, we work with you to understand these responses and guide the healing process. By addressing both the mind and body, we aim to create a safe and effective path toward lasting recovery.

When you work with us, we assess and interpret your body’s responses for targeted healing.
